The Sea to Sky Forestry Centre will provide exhibit space and educational programming on how wood has been used as an energy source throughout history and how new technology is being developed that allows wood to be used as a low carbon impact energy source into the future. Focus on Wood as a renewable source of energy as new technology emerges will be vital.
Wood will play a key role in the emerging bio-based economy. Wood biomass is part of the natural carbon cycle. Burning wood is considered carbon-neutral because it does not increase the amount of carbon dioxide cycling through the atmosphere. Sustainably managed forests and the products derived from them will play a critical role mitigating climate change.
Wood has traditionally been used for energy – for heating and power. New technology is expanding these traditional uses – for example, in converting wood and other cellulosic biomass for use in transportation fuels.
